A visitor checks out bows for sale at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show…
The buzz just keeps getting louder and more frequent. Everywhere I go, from phone calls at the office to bumping into people at the grocery store or in the shopping malls, everyone involved with the outdoors is asking: Are you going?
They don't even have to ask where. The 2012 Eastern Sports & Outdoors Show, the largest consumer-oriented outdoors expo in North America, begins Feb. 4 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. The 57th annual event runs through Sunday, Feb. 12.
The nine-day extravaganza will draw hundreds of thousands of people, some looking to book a hunting or fishing trip anywhere from Illinois to Africa, others looking to check out what's new in the product line for most of the major manufacturers, and still others dying to get a handshake from their favorite outdoors television personalities such as the hunting husband-wife team of Lee and Tiffany Lakosky to crafty fishermen such as Jimmy Houston and Hank Parker.
More will be coming to learn something from the multitude of seminars led by pro hunters and anglers, and others will be coming to either take part in or check out the various calling contests, everything from turkeys to ducks and geese.
Some of the big draw seminars include sausage and jerky making with Rick Fetrow, deer butchering with Chef Albert Wutsch, fly-casting demonstrations with Dusty Wissman and Frank Angelo, and the opportunity to win a one-on-one archery skills seminar from legendary Chuck Adams.
Each year, it seems the venerable show finds a way to outdo itself with something new or a new way of presenting something familiar.
"We are constantly trying to keep the show fresh, " said Chris O'Hara, event director for the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show. "That means attracting new exhibitors who are selling new equipment that our attendees want to see. This year's show will feature a wide range of new exhibitors selling the latest and greatest in hunting and fishing equipment."
More than 1, 200 exhibitors are booked for the mammoth show, showcasing hunting, fishing, archery, power sports, game-calling, boating, clothing, outfitters and more.
The hunting section of the show has 44 new vendors for almost 300 totally exclusive hunting exhibits. The gun area also has a new exhibitor.
"We are very excited about the growth of the gun category this year, including the addition of Smith & Wesson, " O'Hara said. "They will be a welcome addition to our new 'Sportsman's Shop Gun Alley, ' along with Thompson/Center Arms, Benelli, Stoeger, Mossberg, Savage, Sig Sauer and others."
Fishing Hall includes 20 new exhibitors to the massive 172, 000 square-foot area. More than 150 retailers will exhibit a full range of products from top manufacturers such as Berkley, Daiwa, St. Croix, Shimano and Zebco.
The archery exhibitors will include Muzzy Products, back after a five-year-absence, as well as Hoyt USA, Fred Bear Archery and Summit Treestands.
"The Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show is always packed with the latest in cutting-edge hunting and fishing gear, " O'Hara said. "If you have read about it, heard about it, or have seen it on TV, it's a good bet you'll find it at the show."

About that Saltwater fishing expo in SOmerset
by Edmund69 Hey guys,
I had posted about the Fishing Expo in Somerset, remember someone said it was spam? :) Well, I did go to it and it was amazing. Holy shit! I found a new brand (to me) of Fly reel that seems to be really well made and inexpensive, for a fly reel. So soon as I get some free cash I'll order one.
It was really great, it's been a very long time since I've done any fishing and it just felt great to be around like minded people and really get to see what kind of tackle is used up here in the North East. Now I just gotta figure out how, when and where to get out

Pennsylvania gun owners
by ProudCommunist Pennsylvania gun owners threatened to boycott the state's largest hunting and fishing expo Tuesday after organizers announced that they would ban the display and sale of assault rifles at this year's show. Reed Exhibitions, a British-based company that runs the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg each February, notified vendors of the change in policy over the last several days, a company representative confirmed to The Inquirer.
The presence of so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines might have served as "a distraction" from other aspects of the event in the wake of the recent school shootings in Newtown, Conn
